By COSHANDRA DILLARD, Staff Writer

Three Tyler women have been honored by the Junior League of Tyler Inc. (JLT) for their outstanding work in the community during a recent annual general meeting.

Carla Sue Garrett became the 23rd recipient of the Gertrude Buckley Windsor Sustainer Award Sustainer of the Year Award, while Stacy Bengtson received the Mahala Young Active of the Year Award. Troup High School graduate Megan Dowdy was honored with the Young Woman Leadership Scholarship.

The Sustainer Award is presented to a member who has continued to serve in an outstanding capacity with the League. The Mahala Young Active Award is presented to an active member of the League who shows commitment, responsibility, kindness, integrity and service to the League. JLT and Southside Bank fund a $3,500 scholarship each year to a deserving young woman in Smith County.

Carla Sue Garrett
Mrs. Garrett became the 23rd recipient of the Gertrude Buckley Windsor Sustainer Award. Fellow members say that for 32 years, Mrs. Garrett has been committed to positively affecting the quality of life in the community.
She garnered numerous nomination letters, including one describing Mrs. Garrett as "generous with her time, talent and resources."
Nomination letters also point out that she quietly gives her time to church and other community organizations.
Mrs. Garrett humbly accepts the award, acknowledging others who she says are as deserving.
"It's nothing that I expected to get. It's extremely overwhelming," Mrs. Garrett said. "It's still hard to believe."
Mrs. Garrett joined the League in 1968. Her accomplishments included serving on the public relations committee, editor of the News Sheet, Special Committee for Support of Tyler Museum of Art, community arts chairwoman, Children's Theater study committee, corresponding secretary, community research, finance committee, placement advisor and provisional.
"When you are in the League, you are made aware of the community," Mrs. Garrett said. "There are so many different opportunities to do different things in different area. You just can't help but notice the needs of the community when you're doing these different.
Mrs. Garrett has served in many other capacities: on the board for Meals On Wheels board, where she also delivered meals; Culta Mea past president; Women's Symphony League; Law Wives; Baylor Women's Club past president; Rose Festival; and All Saints Parent Teacher Group.
She said she especially enjoys volunteering with schools and working with children, including the Royal Family Camp, a camp for foster children.
"There are lots and lots of needs out there, and I enjoy meeting those needs if I can," she said. "You can never have too many volunteers in any situation. Every day brings you opportunity for doing things, if you're willing."

Stacy Bengtson
Since Mrs. Bengtson joined JTL in 2001, she has served as Mistletoe and Magic treasurer, volunteered at summer reading camp, the cookbook committee, as assistant treasurer, administrative treasurer, financial vice president, fund development vice president, advisory planning and administrative vice president.
In addition, she has served on the boards of Habitat for Humanity, Azleway Girls home and All Saints Parent Association and Booster Club.
JLT members also note that Mrs. Bengtson quietly gives her time. In a nomination letter, Mrs. Bengston is described as someone with a "vivacious spirit and can-do attitude inspiring everyone around her." Others say she has a "cheerful heart and true volunteer spirit."
News about the award was also humbling for Mrs. Bengtson.
"I don't volunteer for the recognition; in fact, I like to stay out of the spotlight," she said. "Over several years, I have so admired those ladies who received this award each year. At my first JLT meeting almost 10 years ago, they gave out this award, and I remember thinking then how awesome to be able to have that kind of impact on a community."
Mrs. Bengtson said her need to help others derives from Christian principles her parents emphasized.
"My dad instilled the importance of the words from John, 'From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.'
"I feel incredibly blessed with all that has been given to me -- my family, friends, faith, health, love, opportunities and much more. I think it is my responsibility to share these blessings with others."

Megan Dowdy
Miss Dowdy has been active in sports and volunteers in the community. She has been on the student council for three years and served as president of National Honors Society.
Other activities include a one-act play performance, coach of a Little Dribblers basketball team and a dual-credit English course at Tyler Junior College. She plans to attend TJC in the fall.

JUNIOR LEAGUE OF TYLER WINS PRESTIGIOUS “JL” AWARD FOR COLLABORATION

The Association of Junior Leagues International Recognizes Senior Servings Program at 87th Annual Conference in Atlanta

TYLER, TX ––APRIL 27,2009--- The Junior League of Tyler received The Association of Junior Leagues International’s prestigious “JL” Award for Collaboration at the organization’s 87th Annual Conference for its Senior Servings program, which services seniors who receive meal assistance through a partner agency during the week but face hunger on the weekends when these programs do not operate.

Senior Servings is a far reaching collaboration between the Junior League of Tyler, East Texas Food Bank and Meals on Wheels.  This food program has resulted in a 500 percent increase in clients served since the program’s inception.  The collaboration addressed an unmet need of providing seniors nutritional food on weekends when community food providers are not in service.  In the words of one 88-year-old senior, “I was born here in Tyler and lived here my whole life.  I can’t cook anymore… If I did not have Senior Servings I do not know what I would do.”  Senior Servings started when food agencies discovered some seniors were dividing their Friday Meals On Wheels allotments into fourths to make it through the weekend.

“As a première women’s volunteer leadership organization, our League has made a commitment to excellence in collaboration,” said Kathy Bauman, 2008-2009 President. “We are thrilled that our international Association has recognized our efforts and lifted them up as a model program for Leagues throughout Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom and the United States.”

“The Leagues do an outstanding job of creating programs that promote voluntarism, develop the potential of women and improve communities,” said Debbie Brown Robinson, 2008-2010 President of the Association. “The ‘JL’ Awards recognize and highlight outstanding League accomplishments that serve as examples for League members in 293 different communities.”

The award was presented at a banquet attended by representatives from 293 Junior Leagues in four countries.

The Junior League of Tyler has awarded a grant of $15,000 to the Tyler ISD Foundation for the 2009-2010 academic year.  The grant will provide funding for classroom, campus, and district grants.  This is the 19th year of the Foundation.

“This funding will allow us to help our teachers and students directly,” said Larry Goddard, Tyler ISD Foundation Executive Director.  “One hundred percent of this donation goes to the grant program.

In addition, the Junior League of Tyler has announced its placement volunteers for the Tyler ISD Foundation for the 2009-2010 year.  The volunteers are Cindy Brady, Keri Clark, Brooke Day, Gina Gandy, and Leigh Ann King.Last year’s Junior League placement volunteers were Aimee Wilson, Dr. Amy Mullins, Tonya Skrocki, and Julie Gibson.

“Each volunteer provides us with 50 hours of service during the school year,” explained Goddard.  “One hour of volunteer service is estimated to be a value of $21.00—so for five volunteers providing 50 hours of service, we actually receive an additional $5,000 worth of gift in kind service.”

The Junior League volunteers are in charge of the SurPrize Patrols, which award oversized checks representing the grants for teachers in the district-wide competitive proposal process.  For the past two years, the grants have been awarded at Convocation in August and in Mardi Gras-style in February.

“The first donation the Tyler ISD Foundation received almost 20 years ago was from the Junior League of Tyler, Inc.,” said Goddard. “We appreciate and admire all the work they do for our community.  But, we are most grateful for their generosity for the 90% of Tyler’s youth who are enrolled in the public schools of Tyler ISD.”
